After outlining briefly the type of analysis used in this note—i.e. the semiotics inspired from the linguist Hjelmslev—the description according to four levels of significance of the photo taken—and set up—by Bob Martin underlines its strong ambiguity. The third level of analysis of the double truncated body isolated within a frame that is itself fractionated particularly reveals the artificial way in which the scene is set. Finally, it leads to the interpretation that this photo stands between a stigmatisation—which dominates from our point of view—and a valorisation of the amputated body.
