Approximately 80,000 new gynecologic malignancies will be diagnosed in 2005, resulting in an estimated 29,000 deaths. Treatment often requires a combination of therapeutic modalities to maximize cure rates. Radiation continues to be an important therapeutic strategy in the management of carcinoma of the uterine cervix, uterine corpus, vulva, and vagina. Current radiation efforts are directed toward improving the therapeutic ratio through conformal external beam radiotherapy and refinement of brachytherapy techniques.
