Humans have used the plant Cannabis sativa for its intoxicating effects for thousands of years. In the United States, cannabis is the most commonly used illicit intoxicating substance among adolescents [93, 175]. Marijuana and other cannabis preparations (other than synthetic pharmaceuticals) are derived from the female plant. The primary psychoactive molecule is Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9-THC), but the plant contains approximately 60 other cannabinoids [73].
