The cristalline is an anatomical element of the eyeball and forms the posterior limit of the anterior segment. It is a biconvex, transparent lens with a variable focus. The lens is neither vascularized nor innervated and exchanges occur by diffusion. It is attached to the ciliary body by a system of fibers constituting the suspensory ligament or ciliary zonule of Zinn or ciliary zone. The cristalline consists of several anatomical elements: the capsule surrounding the cristalline, the anterior epithelium only and the lens fibers which are arranged into multiple cores and a cortex. Cristalline cells, from the equator, are transformed into anucleated cristalline fibers which undergo a very specific phenomenon of blocked apoptosis . In vivo, the cristalline is accessible for direct examination by biomicroscopy. The cristalline may show abnormalities or malformations due to aging. The loss of accommodative abilities leading to presbyopia and its opacity constituting the cataract are the two main cristalline changes observed.
