The management of patients with poor sight in orthoptists’ consulting rooms is ruled by professional competence, but also by the reception that permits the patient to feel safe in an environment in which they must find markers that will offer them security and permit them to express their expectations, to be able to hear, to understand and to integrate the rehabilitation project, renewing their confidence and the attractiveness of life.
Among the environmental factors, the lighting and disposition of the consulting room are very important prerequisites regarding the balance of the lamps in the room, the ratio between the lighting of the keys points and those of the immediate environing areas, the control of the luminance of the sources of light and undesirable reflections.
The objective of the management of the lighting is to create a graduation of light flow that permits adapting the luminosity to the requirements of sight; the detection of the presence of the occupiers of a premises that defines the occupation of a room or an area; the taking into account of natural light that permits dosing the quantity of artificial light.
One can distinguish several typologies of lighting corresponding to precise functionalities or particular problems. For each of these typologies, it is possible to distinguish tendencies with regards to the quality of light to be provided and hence the choice of lamps, so that the patient can situate themselves, delimit the installations and be able to move around confidently.
