Anesthesia in ophthalmology is constantly evolving. While general anesthesia has only slightly changed, regional anesthesia has been challenged by the advent of topical anesthesia for anterior segment surgery. But anesthesia in ophthalmology is not limited to the “topical” anesthesia, and requires control of pediatric anesthesia, anesthesia of the elderly, techniques of regional anesthesia, and perhaps in the future ultrasound puncture. Anesthesia in ophthalmology requires to master a wide range of techniques and skills. It is mandatory that an anesthesiologist working in an ophthalmology department knows the ocular anatomy and physiology, as well as the imperatives of this surgery. A permanent dialogue between surgeon and anesthesiologist is equally necessary for the choice of the anesthesia technique, the adaptation of perioperative treatments and the management of postoperative pain.
