This special issue under the supervision of Dr Guillaume Rousset* constitutes a true milestone in bringing to the attention of the English international readership France's unique way of dealing with its distinguished human rights history and its organizational structures that have evolved in the bioethics sphere. As a distinguished editor who has already collaborated on producing a dictionary of legal-medical terminology, in this special issue he has assembled a host of academic specialists, from established elders to new generational scholars, who have dedicated themselves to the specialization of French law and its associated creation of bioethics. The collection includes an initiation of carefully chosen theoretical blueprints according to which the entire special issue can be tracked, namely visions of the presuppositions of the French judicial system and the way in which bioethics has in various stages interacted with it. We should also bear in mind the now long-established associations with the European community and its requirements with respect to the guiding principles and norms in the health law field and the application of bioethical guidelines. The special issue treats the entire life cycle from human creation until death and focuses on the issues considered most critical culturally in France, the European community, and the challenges of globalization. Indeed, for the first time, an international community can draw comparisons with a variety of judicial decisions, constitutional values, and is given the opportunity to contemplate a multicultural response to pressing controversies at hand.
