The aim of orthopaedic surgery is to restore function, not the original anatomy. Certain functions are indispensable, such as walking, and walking is very well adapted to an arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, transferring the step to the neighbouring joints, in particular the interphalangeal joint. In the event of arthrosic deterioration, the alternative is conservative surgery, which consists of a number of gestures to reduce pain and improve mobility by promoting dorsal flexion. The restoration of this function is particularly important for certain gestures in the professional practice of karate.
