Resumen

Emerging dermatophytes, particularly Trichophyton indotineae and Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII), are reshaping the epidemiology of dermatophytosis through increasing treatment-refractory disease and transmission via skin-to-skin contact, including intimate or sexual contact. This article summarizes the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of these pathogens, with emphasis on distinguishing features relevant to clinical practice and a brief overview of emerging treatment resistance in Trichophyton rubrum . We also discuss diagnostic limitations, antifungal stewardship, infection prevention, and surveillance gaps. Increased clinician awareness and expanded access to molecular diagnostics are critical to improving outcomes and limiting transmission.
