Diseases of the thyroid gland are common and comprise a spectrum of entities causing systemic disease (Graves' disease) or a localized abnormality in the thyroid gland, such as diffuse-symmetric (Graves' disease) or nodular enlargement (goiter) or a mass (tumor).17, 27 After diabetes mellitus the thyroid gland is the most common organ to cause endocrine disorders. Diffuse nodular enlargement of the thyroid gland or palpation of a mass secondary to inflammation, cysts, and benign and malignant tumors may require radiologic evaluation84, 98 including ultrasound (US),43, 116 especially US with fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB),40, 41 nuclear scintigraphy,95 CT,115, 132 and MR imaging.53, 56, 87, 103 This article describes the indications and findings of CT and MR imaging in various thyroid and parathyroid disorders, chiefly thyroid masses and inflammation, and defines the relative merit of CT and MR imaging when compared with US and nuclear scintigraphy.
