Physicians who see infants and children provide the first line of defense in diagnosing malformations and conditions that may require surgical care. In this article, most of the problems in the rectal and perineal area with which primary care pediatricians should be acquainted are discussed. Prompt diagnosis and referral to an appropriate surgeon usually ensures a good outcome.
