THE BEST OPERATION FOR RECTAL PROLAPSE - 11/09/11
Resumen |
Rectal prolapse is an intussusception of the rectum 17 and may be categorized as occult (internal), mucosal, or complete (external). Internal or occult rectal prolapse does not extend beyond the anal canal; some clinicians believe that this is a precursor of complete prolapse. Complete rectal prolapse is an intussusception that extends beyond the anus. Mucosal prolapse refers to protrusion of mucosa only, with the muscular layers remaining in place.17
Rectal prolapse has been known since antiquity. Despite this, its cause is still not completely understood, and there is considerable disagreement as to which operative repair is best. More than 100 procedures have been described for the treatment of rectal prolapse, and dozens are still in use. For example, the Delorme repair was first described in 1900.8 We recently reviewed our experience at George Washington University; these data are included here with this discussion.
