Staging Sleep - 05/09/12
Resumen |
Various schemas have been suggested to describe the different electrophysiologic patterns of human sleep. The Rechtschaffen and Kales method was used from 1968 until the publication of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events in 2007. This article reviews the development of sleep staging. The development of the new AASM manual and the scientific background underlying the choice of staging criteria are reviewed. The rules for the different stages of wakefulness are described, as well as variations recommended for scoring sleep in children. Recent studies evaluating the AASM method are reviewed.
