Drug therapy and surgical management have had limited usefulness in the management of individuals at risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) from lethal tachyarrhythmias. The availability of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) has reduced the recurrence rate of SCD from 15-25% without the ICD to 1-2% using the ICD. This article presents an overview of the ICD: its evolution and technical features, indications for its use, and essential components of patient care.
