Uterine Fibroid Embolization for Symptomatic Leiomyomas: Perioperative Care - 05/08/11
Résumé |
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the myometrium that are found in 70% to 80% of all women of reproductive age, most of whom remain asymptomatic. Although they are benign, uterine fibroids are often the cause of severe symptoms including menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and anemia, as well as bulk-related symptoms such as pain (pelvic, low back, flank, legs), pelvic pressure, abdominal bloating and increased girth, urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency, nocturia, incontinence, ureteral compression leading to hydronephrosis), and constipation. For the 20% to 30% of women who do present with any of these symptoms, it is imperative that a comprehensive work up be done, as many symptoms can also have other medical diagnoses. If uterine fibroids are diagnosed, all appropriate therapeutic options including medical therapies, surgical therapies (myomectomy, hysterectomy, and uterine fibroid embolization), and watchful waiting should be presented, and discussed, with the patient.
