The modern approach to pain relief in children is multidisciplinary in nature. Pharmacologic methods for relief of pain and anxiety may be used in conjunction with other forms of comfort to provide the child with a stress-free environment as well as therapeutic benefit. Prevention of pain and anxiety in children is necessary to avoid psychological and physical sequelae, and it may favorably affect surgical outcome.
