This article reviews psychiatric disorders in DSM-IV that might result in a child or adolescent being unavailable for learning. General issues in assessment and principles of comprehensive diagnosis are described. The flexible application of these principles is illustrated in relation to specific disorders: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety disorders, Tourette syndrome, and mood disorders.
