Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are among the most important and commonly used drugs avilable to dermatologists. A thorough knowledge of the normal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis as well as the pharmacology of, clinical therapy guidelines for, and adverse reactions to GCS, is imperative for proper usage of these agents. This article covers the numerous strategies for minimizing the side effects and complications of these drugs, including methods for monitoring patients and management with diet and nutritional supplements.
