Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease that magnifies the problems associated with critical illness. This disease seems to have a particular impact during the wound-healing process, causing impaired healing and an increased risk of infection. The complications of diabetes, such as macrovascular, microvascular, and neuropathic diseases, further influence wound healing. It is essential for the critical care nurse to have a clear understanding of the effects that diabetes mellitus has on seriously ill patients to maximize positive outcomes for these patients.
