Using Pressure Data To Understand The Link Between Lumbopelvic Movement And Brain Activation In Healthy Individuals - 04/04/23
Résumé |
Studies suggest that structural and functional changes within the brain are associated with chronic low back pain, and these cortical alterations might contribute to impaired sensorimotor control in this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the concurrent validity of an air pressure system designed to detect lumbopelvic movement during functional MRI scanning. A task-based functional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) protocol was designed by asking subjects to perform a bilateral, right, and left hip bridge in an MRI scanner. An MRI-safe pressure system was developed to ensure appropriate task completion during neuroimaging by capturing movement patterns of the trunk (sensors under the lower back) and hips (sensors embedded in the foam roll under the knees). Pressure changes were measured outside of the scanner by digital pressure differential sensors. Analog pressure gauges were used to control system pressurization and independently verify the accuracy of the digital sensors. The digital and analog data were compared in 22 participants. Pearson correlations calculated for each sensor during the bilateral bridge showed high positive correlations indicating that over 90% of pressure change from the digital sensor can be explained by the pressure from the analog gauge (right knee r=.96, right back r=.97, left-back r=.97, and left knee r=.95). Bland-Altman plots showed no bias, and mean differences were under 3 mmHg (right knee:0.29, right back:-1.6, left back:-0.4, left knee:2.6). This project improves the rigor of future studies by validating the digital system and increasing the capabilities of monitoring within scanner movements. Funding: R01HD095959.
