Imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis and follow-up in patients with encephalitis, cerebritis, and brain abscess. MR imaging is the modality of choice in most clinical situations. Fast FLAIR and diffusion-weighted images may help to increase sensitivity in some forms of encephalitis. Although contrast-enhanced MR imaging is invaluable, advances with diffusion-weighted imaging and proton spectroscopy may help to add specificity in the differential diagnosis of brain abscess and necrotic tumor.
