Beyond PDE-5 Inhibitors: Sexuality in Primary Healthcare - 27/06/08
Résumé |
Goals |
To demonstrate the desirability and feasibility of short training workshops for general and family practitioners and their nurses to include sexuality issues in their practice, beyond prescription of medications.
Introduction |
Much of erectile dysfunction is rooted in psychosexual personal or couple issues. It was found that physicians, unless they expert is sexuality, hardly ever deal with these problems, even when prescribing medications for sexual dysfunctions, specifically when prescribing PDE-5 in hibitors. While it was strongly suggested that it is essential to do both psychosexual and couple evaluations and interventions in prescribing medications for psychosexual issues, it was also found that physicians, and even psychiatrists rarely do so because of various reasons.
Method |
I will demonstrate alternative plans for short courses that will allow physicians and nurses in general and family practice to evaluate the psychosexual and couple issues involved in erectile dysfunction (and other sexual issues), do simple interventions, including collaborating with sex-therapists or referring people for sex therapy as a complementary intervention to medication or an alternative primary intervention. Several tools of training will be demonstrated in a hands on fashion. The workshop will utilize lecture format participatory exercises and group processing.
