Vitamin D and the gut microbiome: a relationship in the spotlight

Vitamin D and gut microbiome are key regulators of host immune and metabolic homeostasis. Long studied independently, they are now recognized as components of a complex interactive system involved in numerous physiological processes. The gut microbiome, a dynamic and metabolically active ecosystem, contributes to the production of bioactive metabolites, the maintenance of epithelial barrier integrity, and the maturation of the immune system, and may also play a role in regulating vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin D modulates intestinal permeability, inflammation, and immune responses, while influencing the bidirectional interactions between the microbiome and the intestinal barrier. Numerous data suggest a bidirectional relationship between these two actors. A better understanding of these interactions could help identify key metabolites involved in immune and metabolic health, paving the way for targeted therapeutic strategies. More broadly, studying interactions between micronutrients and the gut microbiome represents a promising yet underexplored research area.
