L’objectif de cette étude est de mettre en lumière l’ambivalence de la nature et de l’héritage du feu. On imagine aisément l’impact de sa découverte initiale lorsque nos ancêtres ont compris qu’ils pouvaient le produire en frottant deux morceaux de bois. Cette découverte fut à la fois révolutionnaire et inquiétante, un pas de géant dans l’évolution créative de l’humanité, le progrès technologique et scientifique, ainsi que dans l’amélioration du confort de vie. Mais il nous faut aussi considérer son potentiel dévastateur considérable lorsqu’un comportement impulsif et libidinal pousse des criminels agissant dans l’ombre à être responsables, d’une part, importante des incendies qui causent des dommages environnementaux et sociaux, entraînant parfois la mort de personnes, d’animaux et de plantes en milieu rural. Plutôt que d’utiliser une échelle semi-structurée, sept questions relevant de l’expertise médico-légale ont été posées à des incendiaires potentiels afin de définir leur comportement compulsif. L’étude des rythmes existentiels pourrait s’avérer intéressante pour renforcer la procédure diagnostique et le suivi thérapeutique des incendiaires.

L’analyse des données recueillies à partir des questionnaires souligne la nécessité de concevoir des moyens thérapeutiques concernant ces délinquants particuliers, qui sont en réalité très différents dans leur structure mentale. Bien qu’ils puissent partager le même comportement violent et dévastateur, ces individus sont parfois motivés par des sentiments négatifs et contre-artistiques.

Our goal in this study is to highlight the ambivalence in the nature and legacy of fire. We can only imagine the impact of its initial discovery when our ancestors realized they could produce it by rubbing two pieces of wood together. Its discovery was at once revolutionary and ominous, a giant step forward in the creative evolution of humanity, the improvement in technology and research, as well as in overall creature comforts. But we must also contemplate its considerable devastating potential when a libidinal impulsive behavior drives secretive criminal actors to be responsible for a significant portion of the fires that cause environmental and community damage, sometimes leading to the death of people and animals and plants in rural areas. Rather than using a semi-structured scale, 7 questions in the frame of forensic expertise were put to potential arsonists to define their compulsive behavior. The study of existential rhythms could be interesting to reinforce diagnostic procedure and therapeutical follow-up.

The analysis of the data gleaned from the questionnaires stresses the necessity to conceptualize therapeutic means concerning these particular criminal transgressors, who are in fact so different in their mental structure. Although they may share the same close, devastating behavior, these individuals are at times motivated by negative and counter-artistic feelings.

We have determined that the symptomatic spectrum is not monolithic. It depends on the intensity of the libidinal drive and the strength of the ego resulting from the implementation of certain defense mechanisms. The attraction to and the fascination with the variations in the shape and color of the flames appear to heighten excitation to the point of masturbation in situ.

The addictive dimension in pyromaniacs seems evident, which stresses the necessity of establishing a long-term care plan and a post-care follow-up, which are adapted to the individual.
