Is eye fixation a subcortical skill?

Eye fixation has often been—and continues to be—relegated to a secondary role, even though it serves as the foundation for the acquisition and processing of visual information. As a component of oculomotor function, it is nevertheless still frequently associated with a static gaze and a control system that is open to debate. While many factors can hinder its establishment and efficiency, it is therefore essential to better understand its mechanisms, since—as in the model proposed by Humphrey and Riddoch—it serves as the gateway to the local and global visual processing of the object of interest, leading to a mental representation and its naming. By reviewing the scientific literature, this article examines the existence and significance of eye movements during fixation. It also highlights the higher regulatory processes involved, which extend beyond the brainstem.
