À partir d’un entretien avec un prêtre exorciste et une écoutante bénévole, l’enseignant-chercheur en psychologie Renaud Évrard a souhaité recueillir le témoignage d’intervenants dans un service d’exorcisme de l’Église catholique. Leur mission semble se situer à la jonction de plusieurs champs de pratiques : la religion catholique, la psychopathologie et l’approche soignante. Cet entretien au questionnement libre a été réalisé en présentiel avec le prêtre exorciste et l’écoutante. Les questions concernent d’abord les parcours respectifs des deux intervenants. Ensuite, le dispositif et les particularités de leurs missions articulant une démarche personnelle, institutionnelle et soignante ont été repérées. La question des apports de leurs parcours et de leurs expériences antérieures a permis de cerner ce qui constitue une forme de formation initiale puis complémentaire, tant au niveau personnel qu’institutionnel. L’entretien a ensuite fait l’objet d’une transcription littérale puis d’une mise en forme de l’article permettant d’analyser l’articulation entre spiritualité, religiosité et santé mentale. L’hypothèse de liens de complémentarité réunissant ces trois champs a été mis en discussion pour en vérifier la pertinence. Il s’est agi d’entendre ce qui peut être déposé par les accueillis, mais aussi par les accueillants interviewés, qui pourrait relever de l’un ou l’autre des registres. L’expérience d’un service d’exorcisme s’inscrit de manière originale à la rencontre de la spiritualité, de la religiosité et de la santé mentale. On peut à l’issue de cette première approche émettre l’hypothèse qu’un soin spirituel pourrait être dispensé au sein d’une organisation ne relevant pas du secteur sanitaire. Un nouveau champ de recherche peut ainsi s’ouvrir.

Renaud Évrard, an associate professor of psychology, conducted an interview with an exorcist priest and a volunteer listener to gather testimonials from individuals who provide exorcism services for the Catholic Church. Their mission appears to lie at the intersection of several epistemological fields: Catholicism, psychopathology, and healthcare. This open-ended interview was conducted in person with the exorcist priest and the volunteer listener. First, the two practitioners were asked questions about their backgrounds. Second, there was an exploration of the structure and specific features of their work, which combines personal, institutional, and healthcare approaches. The information on their backgrounds and previous experiences made it possible to identify their forms of initial and subsequent complementary training, both at personal and institutional levels. The interview was then transcribed verbatim and turned into an article to analyze the connection between spirituality, religiosity, and mental health. Support for the hypothesis that there were complementary links between these three epistemological fields was examined. The aim was to understand the contributions of those receiving care as well as of the practitioners we interviewed, who could fall into either category. An exorcism service is a unique encounter between spirituality, religiosity, and mental health. Based on this initial approach, we can hypothesise that spiritual care could be provided within an organisation not operating in the health sector. This work opens up a new field of research.
