Introduction |
Cerebral abscesses remain a cause of sudden and unexpected death in young people. Forensic autopsy helps to determine the cause and mechanisms of death. We report three fatal cases of cerebral abscesses in young people revealed by forensic autopsy.
Case reports |
A 20-year-old woman presented with isolated headaches and died from herniation of a previously unrecognized 5 cm left temporal lobe abscess. A 14-year-old adolescent presented with multifocal lesions including cerebral abscesses and subdural empyema. An 18-year-old patient suffered cerebral herniation due to intraventricular rupture of a cerebral abscess. Autopsy confirmed cerebral herniation in all three cases, with purulent ventriculitis in case 3.
Conclusion |
This series highlights the importance of forensic autopsy in identifying cerebral abscesses that went undiagnosed during the patient's lifetime and in documenting the pathophysiological mechanisms of death.
