Associations between complex-trauma-related experiences, dialectical core schemas, and emotion regulation strategies in a portuguese community sample - 18/09/26
, Bruno Faustino
Abstract |
Background |
Complex-trauma-related experiences during childhood and early adolescence have been associated with later difficulties in self-organization, self-representation, interpersonal functioning, and emotion regulation. However, their associations with dialectical core schemas (DCS) and specific emotion regulation strategies remain insufficiently examined.
Methods |
This exploratory cross-sectional study included 86 Portuguese community participants aged 18–66 years (M = 32.72, SD = 12.28). Participants completed online self-report measures assessing retrospectively reported complex-trauma-related experiences, DCS, cognitive reappraisal, emotional suppression, psychopathological symptoms, psychological distress, and well-being.
Results |
Complex-trauma-related experiences were associated with self-schemas and emotional suppression. Total complex-trauma-related experiences remained associated with emotional suppression after adjustment for sociodemographic variables and current psychological or psychiatric follow-up. Maladaptive Self schemas showed the most consistent associations with poorer psychological functioning, whereas Adaptive Self and Adaptive Other schemas were associated with higher well-being. Adaptive Self schemas were also associated with cognitive reappraisal.
Conclusion |
Complex-trauma-related experiences and DCS were differentially associated with emotion regulation and psychological functioning. Longitudinal and clinical studies are needed to clarify the temporal relationships among these variables.
