Paleocene planktic foraminifera biochronostratigraphy in Brazilian margin and links to global environmental changes - 22/09/26
, Oscar Strohschoen, Gerson FauthAbstract |
Planktic foraminifera are among the most important microfossil groups for Paleocene biostratigraphy and paleoceanographic reconstructions because of their rapid evolutionary turnover, broad geographic distribution, and strong ecological sensitivity to surface-water conditions. This study presents a comprehensive review of Paleocene planktic foraminiferal records from the Brazilian Margin Basins, integrating historical and modern biostratigraphic schemes with global chronostratigraphic frameworks and chemostratigraphic markers. The review includes data from ditch cuttings, cores, outcrops, and deep-sea drilling sites, highlighting the main advances and limitations in the recognition of Paleocene biozones across the Brazilian margin. The compiled record shows that the Brazilian Margin preserves key intervals spanning from the Danian to the Thanetian, although the stratigraphic completeness and biostratigraphic resolution vary markedly among basins due to hiatuses, dissolution, paleoenvironmental restrictions, and taxonomic issues. Correlation with global biozonation schemes demonstrates that local zonal frameworks can be substantially refined through updated taxonomy and integration with magnetostratigraphic and carbon-isotope records. Major global events, including the K/Pg boundary, Dan-C2, Lower C29n event, Latest Danian Event (LDE), Middle Paleocene Biotic Event/Early Late Paleocene Event (MPBE/ELPE), and the Paleocene Carbon Isotope Maximum, are discussed in relation to their expression in Brazilian and South Atlantic records. The available evidence indicates that the South Atlantic provides an important archive for understanding Paleocene macroevolutionary trends, ecological restructuring, and carbon-cycle perturbations recorded by planktic foraminiferal assemblages. The integration of biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy is shown to be essential for improving chronostratigraphic precision and for correlating local stratigraphic successions with globally significant paleoceanographic and paleoenvironmental events.
