The challenges of the medical-surgical transition from adolescent to young adult in cerebral palsy

Improvements in early treatments for spasticity have shifted the optimal timing for neuro-orthopedic surgeries to the adolescent-to-adult transition period (AA) (ages 15–25). This phase corresponds to a gradual shift in the care model and an evolution in the therapeutic relationship, aiming at promoting the patient's autonomy, functional and decision-making as well. The challenges of the AA transition are numerous, and this transition must be supported with multidisciplinary and coordination. It is essential to avoid any interruption in care and in the handoff from the pediatric team to the adult team, during the course of a surgical project in adolescence.
