Psychosocial consequences of injury among elite student-athletes: Impact on social integration within sporting and academic environments
Résumé |
Introduction |
Conclusion |

Introduction |
Injury is a common occurrence in the journeys of elite student-athletes. Beyond its physical consequences, it can disrupt the balance of the dual sport-study career and alter relationships with various social groups. While the psychological consequences of injury have been extensively studied, its social and academic repercussions remain under-documented within this specific population.
Objective |
The aim of this study was to analyze the psychosocial consequences of injury among elite student-athletes and to examine its impact on their social integration within both sporting and academic environments.
Methodology |
This research employed a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, drawing on the work of Creswell and Plano Clark. Quantitative data were collected via a questionnaire distributed to elite student-athletes who had experienced a significant injury during their careers. Of the 519 questionnaires collected, 186 were usable for analysis. Qualitative data provided further insight into the psychosocial mechanisms associated with the injury experience. Analyses focused on the relational, identity-related, academic, and athletic dimensions of the injured students’ experiences.
Results |
The results showed that injury represented a disruption in the athletic and academic timelines of elite student-athletes. It fostered a form of social desynchronization that could undermine their integration into sporting and academic groups. Support from teammates was associated with a reduced sense of isolation ( P < 0.001) and the maintenance of a perceived favorable position within the group ( P = 0.005). Maintaining contact with coaches was also associated with better social integration ( P = 0.017). In the university context, institutional support appeared linked to higher academic motivation ( P = 0.006).
Conclusion |
Injury was not merely a biomedical (physical) event but also a psychosocial challenge capable of impairing the social integration of elite student-athletes. The results highlighted the importance of social and institutional support in sustaining the dual-career path and preventing social desynchronization.
