A psychologist in the “COVID unit” of the University Hospital of Martinique from August to December 2021. Psychoanalytic listening
Discussion |
Conclusion |

Objective |
My objective was to provide a clinical account of the emotional state of patients hospitalized in the “COVID unit” of the University Hospital of Martinique (CHUM) from August 17 to September 21, 2021.
Methods |
I used an evidence-based practice, meaning a practice based on facts that accounts for one's expertise as a psychologist/psychoanalyst, which was uniquely adapted to each patient. The call for patient mental health support made by hospital management was relayed by the healthcare team to the coordinating body of psychologists. First-hand accounts came from a study group of 31 patients (17 men and 14 women), who were each interviewed once while hospitalized in the “COVID unit”; patients consented to notes being taken.
Results |
A single clinical interview is insufficient to establish a detailed psychopathological diagnosis. However, what the patients were able to verbalize was a certain distress, whose primary psychodynamic manifestation was anxiety.
Discussion |
The analysis of the accounts highlights that transference may have been occurring during the interviews, driven by the patients’ difficulties in articulating their suffering (“ mal-à-dire ”) in a social context still framed by the history of colonization within a morbid public health reality.
Conclusion |
In conclusion, I have highlighted that the patient's speech contributed to the care provided to the suffering body. It allowed the subject to emerge, as they articulated their health condition with their subjective truth. The real body – that of the somatic reality that escapes the patient in the healthcare setting – is articulated by the subject's expression of the symbolic dimension to the body of the imaginary, that of the self-image.
