The use of motor imagery in geriatric rehabilitation: A case report before a cardiac surgery
, Angèle Métais b, Thomas Rulleau cRésumé |
Introduction |
Conclusion |

Introduction |
This case illustrates the use of motor imagery in prehabilitation for an old patient with severe aortic insufficiency in the context of ischemic heart disease. Due to contraindications to preoperative exercise, no physical activity had been initiated. However, the worsening of his functional limitations led us to consider adaptations starting the preoperative phase.
Diagnosis |
The patient presented with moderately impaired motor performance, including muscle weakness, cardiorespiratory deconditioning, and preserved walking ability. His motor imagery abilities were good.
Intervention |
An intervention combining physical exercise (25%) and motor imagery (75%) was implemented during the 4 weeks prior to surgery.
Results |
After surgery, a slight decline in motor performance, consistent with the documented postoperative trajectory, was noted. Adherence to the program was excellent.
Conclusion |
This case demonstrates the feasibility of integrating motor imagery as a prehabilitation tool, offering a safe option for at-risk patients.
