EMDR, the therapeutic alliance, and the curative myth: Toward a critical epistemology of trauma psychotherapy

This article offers a critical epistemological reading of the contemporary enthusiasm for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in the treatment of psychological trauma, taken here as an exemplary case of a broader question concerning trauma psychotherapies. By drawing upon insights from cognitive psychology, comparative psychiatry, and the anthropology of care, we argue that the efficacy of EMDR cannot be properly evaluated without simultaneously examining: (1) the heuristic value of the nosological distinction between simple and complex PTSD; (2) the decisive weight of the therapeutic alliance and common factors across psychotherapies relative to the specific technique itself; and (3) the symbolic function, in the Lévi-Straussian sense (understood here as the capacity of a shared narrative to give shape to suffering), of the neurobiological discourse deployed to legitimize the method. We conclude that the prominence of the neurocognitive model in trauma therapies constitutes a form of modern curative myth, functionally analogous to other traditional healing systems. Far from disqualifying the practice, this analogy reveals its intersubjective and hermeneutic dimension.
