Introduction/Objectif |
Conclusion |

Introduction/Objective |
Facial and cervical lymphedema is a common complication following orthognathic surgery and as a result of treatments for cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract. To date, no method allows for its reliable assessment in the routine practice of physical therapists. The objective of this study was to evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reproducibility of the FAME (Face and Neck Metric Evaluation) method in healthy subjects (primary objective) and its sensitivity to change following orthognathic surgery (secondary objective).
Method |
This was a two-stage prospective observational study conducted at the Tours University Hospital. Primary objective (reliability): twenty healthy volunteers; evaluation using intraclass correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots. Secondary objective (sensitivity to change): twenty patients who underwent orthognathic surgery; measurements taken on Day 1 and Day 8; Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results |
Intra- and inter-rater reproducibility was excellent for all six measurements. A significant reduction in measurements M3, M4, M5, and M6 was observed between Day 1 and Day 8. The symmetric measurements M1 and M2 yielded discordant results and were therefore excluded.
Conclusion |
The FAME method demonstrates excellent reliability and sensitivity to change for four measurements (M3–M6) following orthognathic surgery. Painless, inexpensive, and easy to implement, it is a simple and reproducible tool that can be used in routine clinical practice to enable standardized monitoring of postoperative edema.
