Phantom ‘limb’ sensation following total rhinectomy - 03/11/26
Abstract |
Introduction |
Phantom limb sensation and pain is almost ubiquitous following extremity amputation. While this has been well documented since at least the 16th century (Nathanson, 1988), phantom nasal sensation following rhinectomy has not been previously described in the literature.
Case report |
This patient presented with a phantom sensation of an ‘itchy nose’ following total rhinectomy for invasive nasal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). They had an otherwise uncomplicated post-operative recovery. Six months later, examination demonstrated a pristine nasal cavity with no features of locoregional recurrence. The patient now wears a definitive prosthesis; her symptoms persist but are less intrusive.
Conclusions |
Rhinectomy comes with significant biopsychosocial morbidity, and this case report establishes phantom limb sensation as another potential sequela of total rhinectomy.
