Withdrawal or social isolation at home, although described for a very long time, is a little-known problem, often underestimated by frontline practitioners and outpatient services. It has come back into the spotlight because it affects young people worldwide. The term ‘hikikomori’ combines the idea of monastic seclusion with social rejection. How can someone be shut away, seeing neither day nor night, speaking to no one, and unable to envisage a future? How can one set aside the judgements of others and the pressures of competition? But also, how is it possible today not to be a hikikomori, shut away? It is so easy to communicate with the whole world at any time, to feel as though one understands the world better, and to avoid getting bogged down in the trivial details that have always been discussed ad nauseam within the circle of family, friends and neighbours.
