Objective |
To assess general practitioners’ perceptions, acceptability, and intended use of the International Diabetes Federation–Diabetes and Ramadan (IDF–DAR) risk score for the management of people with diabetes wishing to fast during Ramadan.
Methods |
We conducted a cross-sectional online survey between March and June 2025 among general practitioners practicing in Northern France. The questionnaire assessed socio-professional characteristics, experience in managing Ramadan fasting among people with diabetes, and perceptions of the IDF–DAR risk score. Perceived relevance was evaluated using a four-point Likert scale. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed.
Results |
A total of 106 general practitioners completed the survey. Although 98/106 (92%) reported caring for patients with diabetes who fast during Ramadan, only 52/98 (53%) reported being comfortable or very comfortable managing these situations. The IDF–DAR risk score was largely unknown (94%) and rarely used (2%). Nevertheless, 89% of respondents considered the score relevant or highly relevant, while 95% agreed that it could improve patient education regarding fasting-related risks. Perceived relevance was significantly associated with ease of use, clarity of items, and perceived educational value (all p < 0.01). Overall, 89% reported an intention to use the score in future practice.
Conclusion |
In this self-selected regional sample of general practitioners, the IDF–DAR risk score was perceived as relevant and acceptable despite limited prior awareness. However, intention to use reflects stated behavioural intention rather than observed clinical implementation. Further studies are needed to assess whether dissemination and training translate into actual use of the score in routine primary care.
