Risk factors for allergic diseases in 6-7 year old schoolchildren in South East México City - 25/08/11

Rationale |
Recently in South East México City, the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) determined the prevalence of wheezing in the last 12 months, symptoms of rhinitis in the last 12 months and symptoms of eczema in the last 12 months in 6-7 year old schoolchildren. They were: 4, 51.3 and 10.1% respectively. We investigate the possible relationship of some risk factors.
Methods |
We used the methodology proposed by ISAAC. 3493 parents completed and returned the questionnaires.
Results |
Some factors were preliminary analyzed. Some factors, like ingest of paracetamol positive related with wheezing, rhinitis and eczema (p=0.001). Breastfeeding was no related. To have cat and dog in the first year of life was related with eczema and rhinitis (p=001), but only to have a dog now, was related with both diseases. The contact with animals in the first year were related with rhinitis and eczema. Whereas animals in pregnancy was related with eczema (p=0.0001). Mother and father smoking were related to rhinitis; and cesarean with wheezing (p=0.02).
Conclusions |
Some perinatal risk factors may be related to the development of allergic disease.
