Obstructive sleep apnea is a prevalent disease associated with increased morbidity and mortality. As awareness about the disorder grows, the number of sleep laboratory referrals increases tremendously, along with health care costs. Furthermore, in health care systems with fixed budgets, long waiting times delay diagnosis and therapy. To overcome some difficulties and expedite delivery of care, unattended portable monitoring devices greatly interest practitioners, sleep centers, and third-party payors for diagnosing sleep-disordered breathing. This article reviews the technical aspects and options available for portable home testing of sleep apnea.
