Using the acronym SAFE (Severity Affect, Family, and Environment), a clinical interview strategy is presented to provide a framework in the evaluation of pelvic pain patients. This approach simultaneously evaluates medical and psychological concerns and provides the gynecologist with a framework that guides the physical exam, further diagnostic procedures, and management so that all symptoms—medical and psychological—are considered.
