ADVANCES IN INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE - 06/09/11

Despite the fact that the causes of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease remain unknown, advances in the understanding of the immune system and the control of intestinal inflammation have led to the promise of more powerful and precise therapies. Concurrently, advances in imaging and surgical techniques and a clearer understanding of the complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have resulted in better overall management. Nevertheless, care of the patient with IBD continues to be a challenging endeavor that requires a comprehensive understanding of the disease process. This article focuses specifically on advances in the understanding and treatment of IBD.
