The peak in juvenile crime during the early 1990s combined with media attention to “kids who kill” has heightened concerns regarding violent youth. Juveniles account for nearly one of every five persons arrested for a violent crime.7 Responding to the mantra, “If you do the crime you do the time,” many state legislatures have lowered the age for transferring juveniles to adult court. Mental health professionals provide valuable input regarding the assessment of aggressive youth. An understanding of risk factors and current treatment approaches will assist the clinician in the evaluation and disposition recommendations of violent juveniles.
