In the past two decades, heart failure has become increasingly recognized as a major public health concern in the United States and many other countries, a development which is largely attributable to the aging of the population.21, 55 Not only is heart failure predominantly a disorder of the elderly, it may be considered the quintessential disorder of cardiovascular aging because it reflects the convergence of age-related changes in cardiovascular structure and function and the rising prevalence of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and valvular heart disease with advancing age. In this article, the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, and treatment of heart failure in older patients are systematically reviewed.
