A Simple Tool to Assist Aphasic Patients Select Their Menus in Hospital - 12/09/11
OBJECTIVE: To develop a tool to help Aphasic patients assist with menu selections.
Abstract |
Patients who were aphasic, were finding it difficult to express their food likes and dislikes using a printed selective menu even with help from the dietetic technicians.
Color photographs of the actual food combinations offered on the menu were taken and a menu photo album was developed. This tool allowed the patients to point out their choices.
Speech Pathologists helped identify the patients who could use the menu album; and for these patients dietetic technicians were able to obtain the patient's actual menu choices.
Occupational Therapists also use the menu album to help patients identify foods they usually ate at home to assist with kitchen evaluation.
