Hypersomnia is a common clinical complaint in older patients that has many characteristics unique to this population. Such features are related in part to the effects of comorbid medical conditions and their associated medications, changes in work patterns from retirement or part-time employment, increased prevalence rates of sleep disorders, and biological changes in the sleep-wake drive associated with aging. Assessment of hypersomnia in older patients is also affected by many of these factors. Despite these challenges, hypersomnia warrants evaluation and management because the adverse impact of hypersomnia can be considerable in older adults.
