Objective |
To provide a systematic review on ophthalmologic presentations of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) in conjunction with a case report of primary orbital involvement by this tumor.
Methods |
A thorough electronic search on PubMed, Medline, Scopus, EMBASE and web of science databases was performed. All available data from reported cases along with our described case were extracted and analyzed.
Results |
We describe a 66-year-old male with primary orbital DFSP who was managed by total excision of the tumor without recurrence after 18 months of follow-up. In the literature, 14 studies reporting 15 cases were identified and reviewed. Our review topics included epidemiology, clinical presentations, pathologic features, differential diagnosis, imaging, treatment and prognosis.
Conclusion |
Rarely, but crucially, ophthalmologists may encounter DFSP in the orbital or periorbital area. They should be familiar with the pathologic nature and treatment options for this tumor. This diagnosis should be kept in mind when approaching a case with a non-tender, nodular, firm, mass or more rarely an indenting orbital mass.

Fournir une revue systématique à propos des présentations ophtalmologiques de la protubérance du dermatofibrosarcome (DFSP) en décrivant un cas d’atteinte primaire de l’orbite par cette tumeur.
Méthodes |
Recherche électronique approfondie dans les bases de données PubMed, Medline, Scopus, EMBASE et Web of Science. Toutes les données disponibles des cas rapportés avec notre cas décrit ont été extraites et analysées.
Résultats |
Nous décrivons le cas d'un homme de 66 ans étant atteint de DFSP orbitaire primaire qui a été guéri par l’excision totale de la tumeur sans récidive après 18 mois de suivi. Dans tous les textes, 14 études rapportant 15 cas ont été identifiées et revues. Nos sujets d’étude comprenaient l’épidémiologie, la présentation clinique, les caractéristiques pathologiques, le diagnostic différentiel, l’imagerie, le traitement et le pronostic.
Conclusion |
Bien que les ophtalmologistes puissent rarement rencontrer DFSP dans la zone orbitale ou périorbitaire, il est primordial qu’ils connaissent la nature et les options de traitement de cette tumeur.
