Conclusions |

Objective |
There is still an underutilization of supportive care while its efficacy is now well-demonstrated. The aim of this study was to examine the reluctance of partners of individuals with high-grade gliomas to use available supportive care, using the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), an original qualitative method.
Materials and methods |
The study was performed on a department of neuro-oncology (University Hospital Timone, Marseille, France). The main inclusion criteria were: above 18 years and partner of an individual having a high-grade glioma. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were performed by a trained psychologist. Interview content was analyzed by 2 independent psychologists using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).
Results |
The analysis of 10 interviews highlighted 4 topics providing potential explanations of reluctance for supportive care: i) change of the nature of the relationship between the 2 individuals; ii) social representation and moral obligation for the caregiver; iii) lack of knowledge and misperception of supportive care; iv) specific perception for the psychologist.
Conclusions |
Highlighting the encountered difficulties of caregivers towards supportive care, this study allows rethinking supportive care as an escort and not as a substitutive care to maintain a full role for the partner.
