Treatment for emphysema has focused on slowing its progression through a combination of medical management and pulmonary rehabilitation, and few patients are able to undergo lung transplantation. A new procedure, bilateral lung volume reduction surgery, has demonstrated promise as a treatment for some patients. By removing as much as 30% of emphysematous tissue from each lung, respiratory mechanics improve significantly and patients report relief of dyspnea and improvement in quality of life, as well as demonstrating improved exercise tolerance.
