Lumbar discography is used to evaluate internal disc anatomy and identify clinically symptomatic discs. At the present time, there is no other diagnostic study available that can more accurately determine if a lumbar disc is the pain generator responsible for an individual's symptoms. Discography is useful in surgical planning for lumbar fusions and can be helpful in evaluating patients with persistent chronic low back pain. This procedure can be performed safely by properly trained physicians using strict aseptic technique.
